Make a baking soda compress to get rid of puffy eyes

Waking up with swollen eyes before a big meeting is frustrating, but there is an easy remedy sitting in your kitchen cupboard: baking soda. A bit of a wonder product, you can safely use baking soda in cooking, cleaning and as a beauty tool, according to All About Vision.

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is made from sodium, hydrogen and carbon and there are roughly 1,000 milligrams of sodium in one teaspoon of baking soda! This sodium is what helps reduce the swelling around your eyes because water follows sodium. The sodium helps pull water back into your bloodstream, reducing the swelling, according to LiveStrong.

The remedy is simple: Mix one teaspoon of baking soda with one shot glass of water (about 2 tablespoons) or chamomile tea. Soak two cotton balls in the mixture and then place them under your eyes. Massage the swollen areas around your eyes with the mixture-soaked pads for about two minutes and then let them sit on your eyes for about 10 to 15 minutes.

Rinse the mixture off your face with clean, cool water and moisturize with your favorite lotion, according to Daily Health Post.

If you frequently wake up with swollen eyes, check to see if any of these common factors are triggering the puffiness:

— Allergies
— Fatigue
— Sun exposure
— Dehydration

Drinking more water, wearing sunscreen and getting enough sleep can help prevent swelling, according to the Daily Health Post.
